If you're a parent whose child is preparing for grammar school admissions, you've likely heard of the FSCE 11+ exam. Reading School, one of England's most prestigious grammar schools, has adopted a unique 11+ assessment framework created by FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise), which stands apart from the traditional GL or CEM testing formats. In this post, we’ll explain the FSCE 11+ format in detail, highlight how it’s different from GL-style exams, and explore what this means for preparation.

The exam is structured to be fair and accessible, assessing curriculum-aligned skills in English and maths which cover the subjects taught in primary schools, along with creative writing. Unlike traditional 11+ exams, FSCE does not include verbal or non-verbal reasoning sections, making it more focused on the primary school curriculum.

FSCE 11+ Exam Format: Subjects, Sections, and Timings:

The FSCE test consists of four named papers, each designed to assess different aspects of a child’s skills:

  1. Adventure Paper – A multiple-choice paper covering curriculum subjects including English and mathematics.

  2. Beacon Paper – A short-answer response paper, again drawing from subjects like English, maths, geography, science, and more.

  3. Compass Paper – Another multiple-choice paper with questions based on curriculum subjects.

  4. Discovery Paper – A creative writing task requiring an imaginative or problem-solving response. This paper is only marked if the child meets a qualifying threshold in the academic papers.

The school may choose to administer any or all of the three academic papers (Adventure, Beacon, Compass) before deciding whether the Discovery paper is evaluated. This doesn't affect what the student does on the exam day, it just means that the Discovery Paper may not be marked if a sufficient score is not achieved in the preceding sections.

All papers are completed in a single sitting under timed conditions, with instructions delivered via pre-recorded audio. The test is fully paper-based, and students use dedicated answer sheets for recording responses. If a student has experience writing on answer sheets for other exam formats, such as GL, then they will find it quite easy to adapt to the answer sheets used in the FSCE exam.

Full list of subjects that may be examined:

FSCE questions may be drawn from the following Key Stage 2 subjects:

  • English

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • History

  • Geography

  • Art & Design

  • Computing

  • Design & Technology

  • Music

  • Languages (general reasoning using invented or familiar language)

  • Physical Education (theoretical knowledge, not practical skill)

All questions are curriculum-aligned and based on learning up to the end of Year 5. It may seem daunting to see the increase in number of subjects compared to other exam formats, but the key is that whilst there is a much greater breadth of knowledge tested in the exam, the reliance on knowing specific details is much less. The aim is to assess how students apply classroom knowledge in new contexts, rather than recall obscure facts. At Brilliant Tutors Academy, we specifically tailor our sessions to refresh this classroom knowledge for all students, and particularly for those who have recently moved from overseas and may have missed core content.

Other key features:

  • Curriculum-Aligned: FSCE questions are directly based on the National Curriculum up to the end of Year 5.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Questions: Subjects such as English and maths are not siloed – many questions integrate knowledge across disciplines.

  • Creative Writing Focus: The Discovery Paper allows children to showcase original thinking and expression.

  • No VR/NVR Papers: Unlike GL, the FSCE test excludes separate verbal or non-verbal reasoning papers.

  • Guided by Audio: Audio instructions direct children throughout the test, providing fairness and consistency.

What does this mean for preparation?

Because FSCE tests familiarity with Year 5 curriculum content, revision should focus on school-based learning:

  • Encourage Regular Reading: Boost vocabulary and comprehension by daily reading for enjoyment.

  • Practice Vocabulary and Spelling: Regular quizzes and word games help master vocabulary and spelling skills.

  • Varied Maths Practice: Mix quick arithmetic exercises with complex word problems.

  • Timed Mock Exams: Simulate exam conditions to build familiarity and improve time management.

  • Creative Writing Exercises: Regular short writing tasks to improve speed and expression.

  • Review Mistakes Constructively: Identify and work through difficulties positively.

  • Maintain a Balanced Approach: Regular breaks and fun activities prevent burnout and maintain motivation.
